Sebuah kecelakaan tragis terjadi pada Senin (14/10/2024) di Mesir, menewaskan setidaknya 12 orang dan melukai 33 lainnya. Bus yang mengalami kecelakaan tersebut membawa mahasiswa Universitas Galala, sebuah universitas di Kegubernuran Suez timur Mesir.
Laporan surat kabar milik pemerintah, Akhbar al-Youm, yang dikutip AFP, mengonfirmasi bahwa tidak ada kendaraan lain yang terlibat dalam kecelakaan ini.
Pihak berwenang sedang menyelidiki kecelakaan ini, termasuk kecepatan bus saat kejadian, serta kondisi yang menyebabkan kecelakaan. Sebanyak 28 ambulans dikerahkan ke lokasi kecelakaan yang terjadi di jalan raya Al-Galala, yang menghubungkan Kairo dengan kota-kota di pantai Laut Merah seperti Ain Sokhna.
Saluran berita swasta Sada al-Balad melaporkan bahwa hasil awal penyelidikan menunjukkan pengemudi bus mengemudi dengan kecepatan tinggi dan kehilangan kendali atas kendaraan.
Sementara itu, Kementerian Kesehatan menginformasikan bahwa para korban yang terluka telah dipindahkan ke rumah sakit terdekat, dan 19 orang di antaranya telah diizinkan pulang pada Senin malam.
Kecelakaan lalu lintas seperti ini kerap terjadi di Mesir, di mana aturan lalu lintas sering diabaikan dan banyak jalan dalam kondisi rusak. Laporan dari lembaga statistik CAPMAS pada 2022 juga menyebutkan bahwa kecelakaan jalan raya di Mesir telah menyebabkan 7.101 kematian pada tahun 2021, yang merupakan peningkatan 15,2% dibandingkan tahun 2020.
