Wahana penjelajah (rover) Mars milik NASA, Perseverance, telah memulai ekspedisi barunya di sebuah lokasi yang berbeda di Planet Merah, demikian disampaikan NASA pada Kamis (12/12).
Wahana penjelajah tersebut berhasil mencapai area puncak tepi Kawah Jezero di lokasi yang oleh tim sains disebut “Lookout Hill” dan meluncur menuju perhentian sains pertamanya setelah pendakian selama berbulan-bulan, menurut NASA.
Rover itu melakukan pendakian untuk menjelajahi sebuah wilayah Mars yang berbeda dengan tempat-tempat yang sebelumnya pernah diselidiki.
“Selama pendakian di tepi Kawah Jezero, para pengemudi rover kami melakukan pekerjaan yang luar biasa dalam menavigasi beberapa medan terberat yang kami temui sejak pendaratan,” kata Steven Lee, Wakil Manajer Proyek Perseverance di Laboratorium Propulsi Jet NASA di California Selatan.
“Mereka mengembangkan pendekatan inovatif untuk mengatasi tantangan-tantangan ini, bahkan mencoba berkendara mundur untuk melihat apakah hal itu dapat membantu, dan rover ini berhasil melewati semuanya dengan sangat baik. Perseverance siap menghadapi semua hal yang ingin diberikan oleh tim sains dalam ekspedisi sains berikutnya,” ungkapnya.
Perseverance dan mitra robotiknya, helikopter Ingenuity, mendarat di dalam Kawah Jezero Mars pada 18 Februari 2021.
Sejak saat itu, wahana penjelajah seukuran mobil itu terus mencari tanda-tanda kehidupan kuno di Mars di dasar Kawah Jezero.
Ekspedisi baru Perseverance disebut “Northern Rim” karena rutenya mencakup bagian utara dari bagian barat daya tepi Kawah Jezero.
Selama tahun pertama ekspedisi “Northern Rim”, wahana penjelajah tersebut diharapkan dapat mengunjungi sebanyak empat situs yang menarik secara geologis, mengambil beberapa sampel, dan berkendara sejauh 4 mil (6,4 kilometer), menurut NASA.
“Kampanye Northern Rim memberi kita kekayaan ilmiah yang benar-benar baru karena Perseverance menjelajahi geologi yang pada dasarnya baru,” jelas Ken Farley, ilmuwan proyek untuk Perseverance di Caltech di Pasadena.
“Ini menandai transisi kita dari batuan yang mengisi sebagian Kawah Jezero saat terbentuk oleh tumbukan masif sekitar 3,9 miliar tahun silam ke batuan dari jauh di dalam Mars yang terlempar ke atas untuk membentuk tepi kawah setelah tumbukan,” imbuh Farley.
Batuan-batuan ini mewakili bagian kerak awal Mars dan merupakan salah satu batuan tertua yang ditemukan di tata surya.
“Dengan menyelidiki batuan-batuan ini, kita dapat memahami seperti apa Mars, dan planet kita sendiri, mungkin terlihat pada awalnya,” tambah Farley.
